Prototyping | Functional mechanical prototypes | Exten

Rapid prototyping lead time: often around 14 days (excluding shipping). All production techniques under one roof, without going to several specialists.

Functional prototypes, not show models

A prototype that only looks right does not answer the important questions. Can the part be assembled? Does it carry the load? Does it fit in the assembly? That is why Exten focuses on prototypes that behave like the later series product.

  • —Often producible in the intended production material
  • —Wide range of surface finishes
  • —Multiple manufacturing techniques available
  • —Suitable for fit, function, assembly and engineering validation
  • —Advice on the most suitable process for each development phase

Two prototyping routes

Depending on the development phase and the question the prototype must answer, we select the appropriate route.

Rapid prototyping

From CAD model to tangible part quickly, to iterate early in development. Process and material matched to the question of the moment.

Final-material prototyping

The prototype in the same material as the series product, so mechanical tests and validation are representative before the tooling investment.

3D printing

SLA, SLS, FDM and SLM for prototypes and small batches.

Available prototyping techniques

Exten is not tied to one machine park. For each prototype we select, together with specialised production partners, the technique that fits the material, geometry and purpose of the test.

CNC machining

Milling and turning in the real production material, to close tolerances. Often the most representative route. CNC milling →

Additive manufacturing

Fast and geometry-free, suited to early iterations and complex shapes that are hard to machine.

Vacuum casting

Small numbers of plastic parts with injection-moulding-like properties, without a steel mould.

Model making

Manual finishing to presentation or validation level, including painting and markings.

Short-run techniques

Bridge and pilot series as a stepping stone towards series tooling. Series production →

From prototype to series production

At Exten, the prototype is the first step of a production route, not a stand-alone deliverable. Insights from validation feed directly into the production design: material choice, tolerances, wall thicknesses and the choice of series process.

That avoids a handover between prototype supplier and series manufacturer, and keeps the knowledge of your product with one partner. See how we work →
